- Arthur Warren "Fox" Vyvey, 86, he died at his home near Encampment Nov. 29, 2007.
One of the "Greatest Generation," he served his country as an airplane mechanic in the Army Air Force during World War II.
He was born on the Vyvey VX Ranch Oct. 7, 1921, the youngest child of Charles Louis and Emma Marie Vyvey, joining Vyvey siblings Bert, Carl, Rene, John, Ruth and Grace and Verplancke; half-brothers and half-sisters, Lena, Lillian, Alice, Sam and Butch.
As a small boy, he liked to "snitch" cookies from his mother, and she began calling him the Fox.
On Oct. 23, 1947, he married Betty M. Herring of Encampment; they recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary. Following their marriage the couple moved into the old ranch house at the VX Ranch, eventually purchasing the ranch from his father, Charles L. Vyvey, and operating it in partnership with his brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Phyllis Vyvey.
As a youngster and later ranch owner, Fox did all the work a rancher needs to accomplish in a year: feeding, calving, lambing, spring branding and docking, moving cattle to summer pasture, irrigating, haying, bringing cattle home from summer pasture, fall branding, and shipping.
Through the years he was involved in the Encampment Odd Fellows, Encampment-Riverside Lions Club, and Masonic Lodge. He was one of the Lions Club members who helped move the three towers of the Ferris-Haggarty Tramway from on top of Bridger Peak to a new location at the Grand Encampment Museum and asked that any memorials be given to the museum for restoration of the towers.
In 1990, he sold the VX Ranch and the following year moved to a new home in Cherokee Meadows. Unable to leave the ranching life, he then worked for several years for Nick Jamison on the Fishhook Ranch, and managed the irrigation water for Cherokee Meadows subdivision.
Survivors include his wife, Betty M. Vyvey; two daughters, Penny Walters and Candy Moulton, of Encampment; a son, Kelly Vyvey, of Sinclair; seven grandchildren six great-grandchildren, and many other relatives.
Internment of his cremains will be in the Encampment Cemetery.
