Joseph J. Smutsky, 90, of New Kensington, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009. He was born July 9, 1919, in Pittsburgh, to the late Harry and Bernice Ogar Smutsky and lived in the area all of his life.
A veteran of World War II, Joseph was a sergeant stationed in Panama from 1941 to 1945.
He was employed at General Electric, which later became Jones and Laughlin Steel in New Kensington, retiring after 37 years of service.
He was a member of St. Mary of Czestochowa Roman Catholic Church, New Kensington, where he was an usher for many years and a member of the Holy Name Society. Joseph was also a member of the Father Hertzog Council No. 1381 Knights of Columbus in New Kensington and a lifetime member of the VFW.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Theresa Koziatek Smutsky; two daughters, Martina (David) Serlo, of Tampa, Fla., and Rita Shiring (Paul) Hochstine, of Hampton; three grandchildren, Dr. Adam (Asli) Serlo, of Durham, N.C., Mark Serlo, of Chicago, Ill., and Katherine (Troy) Thomason, of Orlando, Fla.; sister-in-law, Sister Mary Claver Koziatek; and brother-in-law, Tom Koziatek, as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Matthew, Bernard and Frank; and a sister, Julia Kozar.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME, New Kensington. A Christian Funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, New Kensington.
Burial will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Lower Burrell.
The Knights of Columbus will hold a service at 7:15 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
