- Age 57, died peacefully in her sleep, Saturday evening, January 25, 1985 at her residence. She was born June 13, 1927 in the Town of Harrison, Calumet County and had been an Appleton resident most of her life. During her lifetime Doris worked at various locations, most resently Tuttle Press until ill health forced her retirement. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Most of Doris' life was devoted to rearing her 13 children.
She is survived by eight daughters and six sons-in-law: Ann and Don Nystrom, Cumberland, Wisconsin; Lynn and Richard Dahl, Menasha; Barbara and John Stafford, Kimberly; Joanne and Michael Jolette, Diane and Michael Fineran, Betty Jean and John Wilz, Laurie and Dawn Birkholz, all of Appleton; five sons and three daughters-in-law: Lee and Paula Birkholz, Appleton; Sgt. William and Barbara Birkholz, San Antonio, Texas; Robert and Kathryn Birkholz, Neenah; Vernon Birkholz, Jr., Little Chute; Daniel Birkholz, Appleton; 15 grandchildren: David, Nathan, Matthew, Tommy, Scott, Brandon, Brad, Eric, Jared, Tara, Trina, Rachel, Christine, Michelle, Ashley, and one soon to come into the world; a brother, Vernon Bartlein, Inglewood, California; two sisters: Mrs. Joseph (Vivian) Sauter, Mesa, Arizona; Mrs. Robert (Betts) West, Seattle, Washington; her aunt, Dorothy Robinson, Appleton; and her devoted friend and companion, Al Stage, Appleton. She was preceded in death by her parents: Leon J. Bartlein Sr. and Kathryn (Hawley) Bartlein; a brother, Leon Bartlein Jr., killed in action during World War II; her former husband, Vernon Birkholz.
The complete funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, 1985 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Wilbert N. Staudenmaier officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home from 4 until 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 8 a.m. Wednesday until the cortege leaves for the church. The prayer and scripture service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday. To our beloved mother, always giving and never taking, we will miss you dearly.
