Anton married Mary Catherine Elmers in Germany and migrated to America. He made his home in Milwaukee for many years.
When the gold rush started (1849) in California, Anton (age 32) went out to seek his fortune. He left with a party from Milwaukee Wisconsin. After two years of hardship he returned to his family and to his surprize found that his family had not received the money and letters he sent her frequently.
He, and his family, then moved north and bought a farm in Calumet County between Appleton and Lake Winnebago on Manitowoc Road. They chose to settled here because his wife would not risk traveling through hostile Indian country to California.
The July 16th, 1850 census shows Anthony (Anton) Sauter age 33 and a farmer. Living in the town of Milwaukee County with his wife Katrina (Mary Catherine Emmers) age 38, sons John (age7), Peter (age4), and Enoch (age 1 month) and daughter Katrina (age5). Anton and his wife are shown as being born in Germany, while his children are listed as being born in Wisconsin.
The value of the real estate they own is $380 (about average) for other farmers listed on the same census page). John and Katrina shown as attending school. | Sauter, Anton (I1014)

Arthur Warren "Fox" Vyvey, 86, he died at his home near Encampment Nov. 29, 2007.
One of the "Greatest Generation," he served his country as an airplane mechanic in the Army Air Force during World War II.
He was born on the Vyvey VX Ranch Oct. 7, 1921, the youngest child of Charles Louis and Emma Marie Vyvey, joining Vyvey siblings Bert, Carl, Rene, John, Ruth and Grace and Verplancke; half-brothers and half-sisters, Lena, Lillian, Alice, Sam and Butch.
As a small boy, he liked to "snitch" cookies from his mother, and she began calling him the Fox.
On Oct. 23, 1947, he married Betty M. Herring of Encampment; they recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary. Following their marriage the couple moved into the old ranch house at the VX Ranch, eventually purchasing the ranch from his father, Charles L. Vyvey, and operating it in partnership with his brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Phyllis Vyvey.
As a youngster and later ranch owner, Fox did all the work a rancher needs to accomplish in a year: feeding, calving, lambing, spring branding and docking, moving cattle to summer pasture, irrigating, haying, bringing cattle home from summer pasture, fall branding, and shipping.
Through the years he was involved in the Encampment Odd Fellows, Encampment-Riverside Lions Club, and Masonic Lodge. He was one of the Lions Club members who helped move the three towers of the Ferris-Haggarty Tramway from on top of Bridger Peak to a new location at the Grand Encampment Museum and asked that any memorials be given to the museum for restoration of the towers.
In 1990, he sold the VX Ranch and the following year moved to a new home in Cherokee Meadows. Unable to leave the ranching life, he then worked for several years for Nick Jamison on the Fishhook Ranch, and managed the irrigation water for Cherokee Meadows subdivision.
Survivors include his wife, Betty M. Vyvey; two daughters, Penny Walters and Candy Moulton, of Encampment; a son, Kelly Vyvey, of Sinclair; seven grandchildren six great-grandchildren, and many other relatives.
Internment of his cremains will be in the Encampment Cemetery.

Aurelia Brunette
According to the Delta County Genealogy website Aurelia is buried in Fernwood Cemetery. I have contacted the City Clerk and the Street department (They are the ones who dig the graves) and there is no record of her burial. However there were 2 graves moved to the Balenger plot later on, Paul and Ira. They were moved from Potters field. They died in the same time frame as Aurelia so I was convinced she was buried in Potters field and the record was lost. However I contacted All Saints Catholic Church in Gladstone and there was never a service for her, being a staunch catholic there would be a service. So this told me she was NOT buried in Fernwood. I then checked with Holy Cross church in Bay Settlement and there was a service there for her and Edward. I told them how their son Fred stayed at home to care for his parents. They found he bought his burial plot in 1906, (the same year Edward died) and that there was 2 unmarked graves next to his and they are convinced it is Edward and Aurelia.

Barbara Lanessie Fischer was born July 18, 1919, in Nebraska City, NE, the daughter of Roy H. and Lessie Stuart Fischer. She attended school there and was graduated as valedictorian of her class at age 16.
Perky and vivacious, she was involved in most high school organizations and her class, serving as president of "some organization or another," according to a write-up in her school newspaper at the time of her graduation. Her primary talent and interest, however, lay in the performance arts. She made her high school stage debut in "The Blue Tea Pot" and was involved in many other theater productions. She played drums in the school band.
She was chosen by the Daughters of the American Revolution for the Ruth Bryan Owen Good Citizenship Award and was a member of the National Honor Society.
Following her graduation, she took her citizenship a step further when she went to Washington, D. C., to work in the office of Naval Intelligence and for the secretary of the U.S. Postal Service. But after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 she saw a greater need. She joined the WAVES, a World War II all-woman division of the U.S. Navy that organized in 1942. She was with the first contingent of WAVES to see duty outside the continental United States, when she was posted to Pearl Harbor.
After her enlistment on Jan. 7, 1944, she attained rank of Yeoman Second Class, serving two years until her discharge at Pearl Harbor in March 1946. While at Pearl Harbor she met Harry Robert "Bob" Herring, who also served his country in the Navy. They were married March 9, 1946, and this required her to leave the WAVES. They had one son, Robert J., and the family became Bob, Bobbie, and Little Bob.
Following their service to the country, the Herrings returned to Encampment, where Bob had been born and still had a large family. There she had a position with the Encampment Post Office. Moving to Colorado she returned to work in federal service, including a stint with the Regional Office of the U.S. Post Office in Denver.
In 1965, they returned to Encampment where they owned the Sugar Bowl, operating it as a soda fountain, game center for young people, and general merchandise store. During this period the woman known as Aunt Bobbie to a legion of nieces and nephews, became Aunt Bobbie to a much wider group of young people in the town.
After ten years, the Herrings sold the Sugar Bowl. They spent one year living in Bairoil running The Store, before returning to their Encampment home and spending summers living in Hog Park, running the cow camp for the Vyvey-VX, Saulcy, and Munroe-X7 Ranches.
Always interested in performing and music, she could play most instruments particularly the organ and piano, and for a Sagebrush Senior Center musical group she even played the bird. She was often the accompanist for the Grand Encampment Opera Company melodramas.
Along with her husband and son, Mrs. Herring was a charter member of VFW Post 6125 in Encampment, serving as post quartermaster for six years, as secretary, and then as commander in 1991-92. To recognize their service, she and Bob took part in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star Lodge No. 17. She had been involved in many other organizations including Sunshine Rebekahs and enjoyed sharing stories of the military as a volunteer at the Grand Encampment Museum Living History days. She served on the Carbon County Senior Services Board and was involved in developing and building the centers.
She is survived by her husband, Bob and son Robert J. (Rosalyn), of Encampment; granddaughters Lenessa Keehn (Josh) of Deadwood, SD; Ramona Quick (Donnie), and Rachel Shepherd (Anthony) both of Craig, CO; and Kendra Uken (Rich) of Aunsbach, Germany; and eight great-grandchildren, Abigail and Allison Keehn, Cayman and Deklen Shepherd, Sharon and Donnie Joe Quick, and Trevor and Wyatt Uken and baby girl Uken coming soon. She is also survived by a large extended family including many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Edward Fischer.

Beatrice Waterbrook Ross
1937 -
Bea Ross, a pianist, organist, accompanist, and singer, has taught piano for over fifty years. She has also been active as a vocal soloist and singer in ensembles and choirs.
Bea was born in Modesto, California, one of three children and the only daughter born to Louis and Emma Cavil Waterbrook. Music was an important part of family life, her mother being a pianist and her father a singer. Bea began singing in church at age two and started piano lessons while very young.
Most of her childhood was spent in West De Pere, Wisconsin, where she attended and graduated from the local high school in 1955, after having attended Wisconsin Academy for a while. In those formative years, she was particularly inspired by music teacher Barbara Kellogg Worden. Bea then enrolled at Emmanuel Missionary College, now Andrews University, where during her freshman year she decided to pursue a voice major. While at EMC, she was a member of the Collegians, a select choir directed by Melvin Davis, another influential music teacher in her training as a singer.
She married Richard Ross in 1957 in Denver, Colorado, and in the following year, established a piano studio, which continues to the present in the Walla Walla, Washington, area, where she has lived since 1970. In subsequent years she has also worked as a secretary and office manager and sung in church and community choirs as well as in smaller vocal ensembles. Beginning in 1977 and continuing until 1992, Ross was choir accompanist for the Milton-Stateline Seventh-day Adventist School in nearby Milton-Freewater, Oregon.
One of her brothers, Carl E. Waterbrook, a singer and choir director, pursued a career in music after graduating from Walla Walla College with a music degree in 1968. He taught music at Georgia-Cumberland Academy and Savannah High School in Georgia, and completed an M.Mus. at AU in 1973.
The Rosses would have three children, Karin Sue, Kathryn Ross (Schaffer), and Robert Alan. Kathryn, who completed a B.Mus. in clarinet performance at Walla Walla College in 1986, is pursuing a career in music teaching and is active as a clarinetist. | Waterbrook, Beatrice Georgia (I3292)
